Well, my first attempt a spraying something will be a set of book shelves

So question 1: Should I spray them standing up, on their back, on a side?

This will be a repaint of an old set of bookshelves, not a new project!<O:p</O:p

It is always easier to prevent runs if you can spray a flat surface, gravity helps in that situation, unlike standing up when you get a bit too much application on a surface.

Cut some 4" x 4" x 1/4" squares and drive one inch brads completely through at the corners. Set these under each corner of your shelves and spray the top only. Then, flip the shelves by holding the edges and paint the other side, painting the edges first and then the shelf.
