There are a lot of folks here that are more knowledgable than me, so could someone please help me with my recent acquisition? All I know is, it's a Stanley No. 24 and it's 8" long. I've read that somewhere in the 20's, they switched to 9" long...and that's all I know. Date, type, anything else? Thanks very much.
I gotta say...the pics make it look dirtier that it really is. It attracted me because it's really in pretty good shape. That said, it does need clean up and may rehab...? Oh...$20.

Bob Kaune puts the date on the blade at 1886-1890.

I've got two transitional jack planes set up. The both work wonderfully and were steals off the bay for less than $25.
One I put a new lignum vitae 3/8th thick sole on and reshaped the mouth. It really is quite effortless to rough in a board with
as it's quite a bit liter than a metal #5 IMO.

To set up your transitional smoother you might have to do a bit of work on the edge of the blade, the chip breaker, and making sure the sole if dead flat. Getting
the sole dead flat is easy and I use a card scraper to tune it in after marking it with some 220 grit sand paper on a table saw leaf. They stay in tune
a fairly long time too.

Enjoy the shavings.
