Found this about a year ago and only now got round to cleaning it up. It's stamped on the shaft Made In Sheffield but no makers name. Anyone have any ideas as to it's history?

Haven't seen one exactly like it ,but the all metal gauges I have seen before were in old paper catalogs for pattern making supplies or being used by a pattern maker.

Thx Mel

Well judging by the responses, it's pretty rare.

Very similar to the Stanley 90 and many other similar versions (General Tool, Craftsman, no idea how many others). I'm not sure where the design originated. Most that I've seen have just the one head, though; this one looks like someone found it helpful having two heads on one bar.

I've used mine a couple of times; it's helpful for some applications, like marking thin stock and small work, where a regular marking gauge is too bulky.

Does it actually have nickers (scribes) on each end?

Ya it's definely an original double headed marking guage with scribers at both ends. lee valley has produced a knockoff of something similar.
