Remove Platen On 1" Belt Sander?

I have to sand some curves. I was wondering if I could remove the platen on my Harbor Freight 1" wide belt sander, then use it to sand with? Does that platen come off and will the belt stay on?

The platen has nothing to do with tracking. Should be two screws.
