I am working on a project and want to inlay/inset a logo. I could probably do it with a veneer inlay, but it would look a lot sharper if I could use one of the vinyl back window logo's you see on cars:

I think this would work and hold up well, but I would probably best do a very light coat of shellac before I spray on the topcoat (most likely target em6000 or em2000).

Anyone done this before? Any thoughts on how it would work?

No experience, but I doubt it will hold up well. Vinyl is soft and conventional wisdom says putting a hard coating over a soft one is a recipe for failure. Also, vinyl decals will have plasticizers which might react with the finish above it. They sure do when placed on top of a finished surface.

yeah, that was my concern. My other option is to do a veneered inlay, which while I have done smaller items, this would be my toughest, most detailed one yet. Fun to learn, but not that efficient when I want to get the project finished, hah.

I have no experience either but they do this all the time on race cars. I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Don't know if this would work for you. Water slide decal that you can spray a finish on. http://www.decalpaper.com
