I had never even heard of the Smithsaw, a radial arm saw made in the early '60s until today. I have a chance to buy one for less than $50. I am told it is running, but do not see a blade in the photo. If so, is it worth getting? I have a Dewalt RAS that I have not used in years, though keep thinking I need to set up and starting using.

Thoughts?

You already have one radial arm saw that you have not used in years. Why would you want another one even if it was free? Just curious…

Why do I have so many routers? I don't know, but I am not selling any of them.

On the RAS, it can do some things, or so I have read, that a normal one cannot do. Partly though it is also perhaps worth more than I can buy it for, so buy, fix up, then sell. Was also curious about the saw.

Oh, and I have not used my current RAS partially because I don't have room for it in my shop. I hope to one day soon build a new, larger shop so my wife can once again park in the garage.

Get it, polish it up, sell it. Done.

See if parts are are available, even used parts, before you jump into that one. I've never heard of a Smithsaw.

That was actually one of my concerns. I read that they don't take a standard 5/8" arbor blade, but a 1 1/4" instead. Will likely pass on it for now.

There was a rather good RAS sold under the name SAWSMITH, and manufactured by YUBA. YUBA was one of the names under which the SHOPSMITH was manufactured. It had a 5/8 arbor.

Sounds like a Sawsmith.

Someone who likes vintage Shopsmith equipment would buy it for that price.

It appears I am dyslexic. It is Sawsmith, not Smithsaw.

You must be talking about this: http://www.ksl.com/?nid=218&sid=72770&ad=34073207

When I googled SmithSaw Radial Arm, the search came up with the ad and this thread. Looks like this saw company was competing with Crapsman. Honestly, There are better saws around.... they're out there (Dewalt, Rockwell, Delta.....the older ones).

Actually it is one I found while traveling in Montana. Has a full cabinet under it for $45. May still go back up and get it.
