My bride and I were out running some errands and doing a little antiquing and I ran across this prize. All indications are it's a type 3 Bedrock 605 1/2 Jack Plane. Incredible shape for being over 100 years old. Knob and tote are free of any damage at all and the japanning is in great shape. There is zero pitting and the blade hasn't been sharpened many times at all. By the looks of it the tool saw little use. The price was right too. I'll spend more on a Hock blade and chipbreaker. Here she is after a light cleaning to knock off minimal surface rust.

A beautiful find.

My preference is for the round sided Bedrocks. Most buyers want the flat tops.

A 605-1/2 is not a common size.

Nice find Rob. Can I ask what you paid for that beauty?

Good on ya, and Halleluiah! I collect Bedrocks and don't have an early 5-1/2. Late, yes, but...

Clean it up and enjoy. Mine is certainly a favorite, for size, weight, and function. If you paid too much, seriously, it wasn't too much.

$59.00 with the cash discount. More than I typically pay, but a bargain for a vintage user (in my book). It's a nice piece and it plugs a hole in my collection of users.

Five replies...and no one said it?

Guess I will

YOU SUCK!

There now, that is taken care of. ( OP can return the favour on mine, something about $4 finds)

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

I'd have gladly paid $59 for that tool in that condition. Congratulations on an excellent find!

You can sell the lever cap for probably $30 or so and just put a standard cap on. The stealth version. In other words, you suck. The 5-1/2 is one of my favorite sizes. Is that a 2-1/4" frog or 2-3/8"?

I guess I'd have to say I prefer the flat tops too. I'd love to find a 604 1/2 that I could set up as a fine smoother. I guess it's time to take inventory and start some horse trading.

It's a 2 1/4". I put a fresh edge on the iron this morning and it cuts real nice. I may not bother with a Hock iron and chipbreaker set.

+1 on what Bill said.

If the old iron is rocking, don't bother Hocking. :D

Agreed. I'll save the money for more rust hunts.
