The 14" long plane MAY have it's model number stamped into the left side. aka a Millers Falls No. 14 jack plane. Decent user plane

Number two: Stanley No. 7 Jointer plane. Also a decent user plane.

Sharpen them up, put them to work.

Cody,

You got a terrible deal, send them to me and my generosity will reimburse you for your losses.

Actually this is where most people would give you a big YOU SUCK!!! kind of greeting.

Meaning ya did good.

If you search for > junker to jointer < you will find my rust bucket #7 that actually cost a bit more.

Like Steven said, sharpen up the blades and have some fun.

I looked on the side of the 14 inch and couldn't find anything. I have another 2 planes I got recently. I want to clean them all up when I get a few minutes

I have found a few planes so far at garage sales, is there any rule of thumb for which are the best to buy, value or use.

My guess (though I somewhat have a growing assortment of Millers Falls...): you have a Millers Falls made-for-Sears (late 1950s or early 60s, pre-plastic handles) no. 14. Sears carried a red label and blue label version, both made by MF for a while. I've not seen those particular stampings before. The 305 is much like the Sargent numbering system, but the blade, red frog, and raised base for the front knob still scream MF.

As to the longer plane, most of us need shots of the area under the handle (beneath and behind the frog) to give you more educated guesses. However, the handle shape and possible wood typing indicates that this plane could be made around the WW2 era when bakelite and hard woods were replacing the Rosewoods and other exotics.

As long as the MF doesn't have an adj plate between the frog and the base, your #5 (14") should clean up and work like a champ. I've found that MF and Sargents made equally good planes as Stanley; sometimes, better.

Oh, and you really got a good deal!!!!!!

enjoy

As Archie said, the Miller's Falls and Sargents are just as good if not better than Stanley planes. There are also other brandings that folks like.

The best ones are the ones that haven't been abused or allowed to rust away.

My preference is for Stanley/Bailey style planes from before the 1930s. Many planes from after that time are just as good.

One of my main considerations is finding parts for old Stanley/Bailey planes is easier.

Many folks have a different preference in their plane acquisition planning. Some folks like to stay with early SW types, others like type 11. There are some folks who attempt to accumulate only Winchester, Keen Kutter or other rebranded planes.

The best ones are the ones you get for $7. That will be a great user.

After taking another look at the #7 a few things indicate it is a type 15, 1931-1932.

The ring around the front knob indicates it was made after 1929. The old arch style frog and key hole lever cap dates it to before 1933.

Planes made before 1931 still had one patent date behind the frog.

Type 15 was the last type with an SW mark on the blade.
