I use a laptop for my laser its connected to wifi as sometime I go on the net with it to get stuff for the laser but lately it is having a hard time connecting to the net. Sometimes it will sometimes it won't. I tell it to diagnose network connection and it finds a problem fixes it and then it connects but I still can't get on the internet. Any Ideas thanks for any help.

Either the latop wifi connection or the router itself is failing. If you connect with a network cable what happens?

I haven't tried that but have two other computers on cable they seem ok as I'm here now LOL

in the lower right hand corner you will see a connection icon on the laptop. If you click with the left mouse button and disconnect and then reconnect does the connection become established? And how old is the laptop?

The wi-fi (RF) portion of routers die from time to time (and on laptops, as well, of course)... if cabled conenctions work, concentrate on the RF portion. I have sent back two Verizon routers over the last 8 years because the RF portion slowed to a crawl and/or completely died. Cabled systems work just fine at normal speeds, but anything connected wirelessly had trouble keeping a connection and/or received extremely slow connection speeds.

Dan is there a way to determine if its the router or the computer. My phone works off the wifi and it seems ok.

OK I've now taken the laptop into the office and connected the cable and it connects to the internet just fine. I guess that answers the question as my phone works fine on the wifi . So the routers is OK i guess and the rf in the computer is bad.
Question" Can this be fixed its a long way from the router to were the laser is and a long cord does not seem reasonable.

Are you getting a connection but just can't go any place on the internet.

You may try going to a command prompt and typing.
Ipconfig /flushdns
Then Ipconfig /release
Then Ipconfig /renew
Then Ipconfig

This should tell you all you need to know, Ip address, gateway address and the DNS.

Now see if you can get to place on the internet.

Yes Bill its says I'm connected. Unfortunately I don't have time right now to try that. I have to leave on a PGR Mission. as Most of you know we lost another Marine last week in that Helicopter crash in Nepal. He'll be landing at Sky Harbor in a couple hours and we've been asked to Escort this Fallen Hero to the Mortuary this day. I'll be back late this afternoon and try all the Ideas offered here thanks for the help.

Just because a system connects doesn't mean it has a good connection... you really need to connect a system to it wirelessly and try to transfer some files, surf the net and watch a video, etc.

Right Dan thats whats happening it says connected but it won't do anything, won't load web pages even.

Bill I tried this 3 different ways. 1. connected to wifi 2. not connected to wifi 3.connected by cable nothing worked:(

When you type Ipconfig from the command prompt you should get something like this.
314721

If you are not then you are not connected.

You may try and uninstall the network adapter and then reboot the computer, make sure the drive is there. You could go get the latest drive from the manufactures web site for the laptop if you have another PC you can use.

this is over my head i think.

I was just working with a computer that was definitely connecting to the internet (able to stream HD video out to Livestream), but when you tried to go to the internet with IE, you immediately got a "cannot load page" message. Went on for weeks. Tried the diagnostic and I saw a note about Norton. So I disabled Norton and it started working, except no virus protection. And at home, I gave up on sporadic wireless connections and hardwired my laptop.

well I'd like to hard wire it but its 20 feet away from the router in a different room and need to stay were it is to run the laser.

I put up with it a long time before I finally decided to find a way to run Cat 5 to my laptop and also to my BluRay (smart TV connection). Both involved going through the floor, and one going outside and under the deck. Not easy but worth it. So now I have an Ethernet outlet in the wall in my kitchen where I keep my laptop.

Bert, if you haven't done so, I'd recommend unplugging your router and leave it unplugged for about a minute. Then plug in back in and see if it's better. 3rd party router firmware often has a means to reboot the router on a schedule. Factory firmware usually doesn't. I wish it did. Like Dan said both the router and PC have radios. Either one getting flaky would cause your symptoms.

And I agree with Ole about cable if you can. Verizon Fios uses a technology called MoCA (multimedia over coax, I think). It is able to piggyback ethernet over coax so anyplace there's a cable TV outlet you can have an ethernet connection too. Published speeds might be lower than WiFi but 'real world' speeds seem faster, plenty fast for my purposes. There is one issue with MoCA, it doesn't work with satellite TV signals.

Check this post i started a few months back about powerline adapters, this may solve your problem of getting a wired connection to your laptop without running a cable. I'm quite pleased with mine www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?225201-Getting-WiFi-to-shop

So how does this work? I plug a thingy into a wall outlet near my computer and then just plug in the computers Ethernet cable into the thingy in the wall outlet and thats it. Or is there something I have to hook up to router?

One thingy gets plugged into a receptacle near your router and a cable goes from router to thingy. The second thingy gets plugged into a receptacle near the laptop and a cable runs between the two. You may need to try a couple different receptacles to get the best throughput but you should be about the same speed as wifi. It's not perfect, mine does stutter a few times a day when I'm streaming iheart radio but I'm running it through 2 breaker panels and about 100' of wire.
