That is a burl, and it is certainly hollow! Super nice for your first hollow form, Joe, and to get a fine burl like that is just icing on the cake! I would say that you are off to the races! The open void would give a lot of turners with more experience than you, a bit of "pucker factor," so it seems you managed that piece pretty well!
