In the Scott Landis Workbench Book he shows the Tom Nelson version of fabricating around and mounting with a metal mechanism. This includes routing a groove in the table top for the top plate of the mechanism to slide in and out. In trying to simplify this I am considering milling down a "spacer" to be placed between the benchplate and the bench that would effectively accomplish the same thing. If this spacer were glued to the bench top, would this compromise the vise to the point where it might fail? Schwartz cautions on trying new stuff since the tried and true is there for a reason. However, I don't see how the spacer would be structurally less strong than the benchtop itself. The only slot required would be through the breadboard end. Thoughts?
