I'm planning on building some box newel posts out of maple with frame and panel construction. The rails will end up being 6"-8" or so wide. Do I need to worry about a rail that wide moving with the seasons and causing issues if its glued to the stile?

I've made those using kiln dried wood and never seen any problem. Even most of the old ones you see don't show much
movement.

Shouldn't create any noticeable issues. I run rails that size all the time on paneled ends with no problems

If you are using traditional M&T joinery you should consider using two tenons rather than one giant one to preserve the strength of the stile. If you are using stub tenons, however, it won't matter.
