Chestnut with Pewa

Way back a couple of years ago I swapped a piece of Mesquite for some American Chestnut that Sparky Paessler had obtained. For a variety of reasons I only got around to turning it a few months ago. Because of some end grain cracks that I glued but were still visible I decided to add Butterflies (Pewa's in Hawaii). Here is the result - 10" x 4.5" and finished with WOP.

NIce job Kelvin. You keep do some extra features. What size butterflies did you use and did you make your own pattern? I was about to try some, but could not decide on size to use.

Tom, they are 0.7" butterflies that I got from http://www.stebbinsstudios.com/html/inlay_patch_order_page.html along with the template. On that site they suggest getting the router parts from MLCS which I did. They sell both "square cornered" and round cornered pewa's. I bought the round ones on someone's advice because they match the radius of the router bit and save you having to chisel out the corners!

I love the butterflies! I've got several big bowls with cracks that I have wanted to add butterflies or Jerry Kermode's "stitches" (biscuits cut with biscuit joiner), but haven't got around to yet. One of the reasons I haven't got around to it is because of having to make my own butterfly pattern. I didn't know you could buy them, so thank you for the link and info!

I like the bowl, I like the shape, I like the butterflies, I like the simple foot on this bowl. My only comment would be spell out "American" instead of "A. Chestnut".

I think he must be referring to the picture of the bottom. It shows A. Chestnut as the wood type where you signed it.

Thanks. I have seen Stebbins "pewas" in the past when visiting The Big Island, but have not ordered any. I have tried to make some on my own but could not decide on a size or shape but now have a Colt router and the router bit/bushings from MLCS and it is on the list and ordering the pewas and pattern may be the push needed.

Go for it Tom, it's remarkably easy. You will need a hot melt glue gun to stick the template in place. My bowl was already finished with WOP which made the glue removal very easy. Run a bead of glue around where you plan to insert the pewa and push the template down hard on that spot. Once you've finished the routing just twist it off. Do all the holes before you insert the pewas as they stick proud and get in the way of the template. Then glue them in (I used CA glue) and carve off most of the excess then sand the remainder. I used a chisel and a sanding block.
