Does anyone know what kind of plane this is and if it has any value? The only markings are Made in USA. It is 2" wide and 9" long.

Thanks,
Greg

By size, it would be known as a smoother.

Is there no inscription on the blade?

It looks like an inexpensive item to get a few shavings off of a sticking door and then spend the rest of its existence on the back of a shelf.

Golly looks a lot like a Stanley 40. Don't think it is though.

It's another 'antiques roadshow' moment.

You can retire on the proceeds.

It does not appear to be Stanley 40 but the design says otherwise. The mouth is too wide and there is no depth adjustment. No lateral adjustment too.

I think its a scrub plane with the wrong blade.

If its not that's all it will be good for.

Not quite the same, but some resemblance to this 40 1/2 guy: http://www.antiqbuyer.com/images/2015-2-ARCHIVE/IMG_6776.JPG

It is based on the Stanley #40. It even has the rib they added behind the "frog" part of the casting on the later model #40s, because the early ones had a problem with the blade vibrating loose due to too little frog area behind the cap iron screw. (I have one of the early 40s lacking this rib, and it sucks).

It is wider than a #40, but still, with that huge mouth and no chip breaker, and no adjustable frog, its probably most useful as a scrub plane, even if it was sold as a cheap smoother.

A horse walks into a bar. The bar tender says "Why the long face?"

I have one just like that and it says Defiance on it. The blade on mine is ground with a lot of camber like Stanley's scrub planes and that is what I use it for. It would be pretty useless for anything else. Monetary value? Maybe twenty bucks or so.

The plane needs a bit of skill to use it. Tapping on the iron to adjust it,just like a wooden plane. Perfectly effective once the user gets used to it. The iron needs to be of decent quality, and the sole pretty flat,of course.

Personally,I have used wooden planes for so long,I enjoy adjusting the iron. It only takes a few seconds when you know how.
