Not my normal forum, but I do a fair amount of turning.

Thought a few of you might get a kick out of an 8' porch post on the lathe.

My apologies for the cruddy pictures, and the mess in the shop. And the poor lighting. and the bad framing of the photos. And. . .

Thanks!

These went on a customers house, not mine. 5.5" square ends, 94" long.

Nice job on those Matt............the pummel cuts are a bit unusual in that they are not just rounded to the bead, and have the dip out on the outside of the corners, but it works. That is a pretty nice turning setup........how much swing does that lathe have?

What kind of lathe, and how much power to drive it?

Thanks, folks.

Lathe is a delta 1460. The swing is 12", current length capacity is 9'-ish. I built the extension for the lathe to do these longer jobs, but eventually I'll finish the 14' lathe and have to part with this one due to space constraints.

The lathe is (right now) driven by a 3/4hp DC motor, with variable speed. The motor will likely get switched back to the much bigger 1/2 HP 220v original motor, but for the longer posts I need the low end speed the DC motor gives me.

For what it is worth, the DC motor is great, just not quite enough torque at the 100-200rpm range when its trying to spin 50-75#.

Thanks. I enjoy doing large posts. They are bit different than my normal turning projects, so it gives me a nice change of pace.
