Stopped at a junk store looking for tools. Nothing I needed. But they had several 50 foot long x 12" wide rolls of 3M Safety Walk 610. This is the adhesive-backed abrasive tape you put on stair treads to reduce slipping. Looks to be around 80 grit.
I really get a kick out of re-purposing stuff. So, hmmm, sez I. Wonder if the coating will prevent me from using it as sandpaper to clean up tools? So I took a rusty old chisel off the shelf and quickly polished it up.
Paid $50 for one roll. This stuff retails for upwards of $350/roll. I cross-checked the price I paid against good 4" wide sandpaper rolls of the same grit and - assuming it works as I expect - this was a good deal. So now I have enough 80 grit sandpaper for one lifetime and maybe even for THREE lifetimes! Sure wish they had some 120 grit. Id go buy a couple rolls of that!
