Its a depth lock

Looks like it is for setting a depth stop. Is there a corresponding adjustment thumbwheel on the planer head above it?

Yep. A bit bigger than a thumbwheel, but the same concept. Look right above the post in the picture in the link Chris provided.

You can adjust that for actual blade height, or as a repeatable set height. Just make sure you remember which one it's set for.
A Wixey height indicator is a nice addition to the planer.
