Yarn bowls

311332Bowls turned for ladies in a knitting club. Learned to air dry, causing the bowl to split. I drill a hole when the split gets abou 1/2 way down. I then bag, dry, and finish turning. Red cedar bowls tuned thick for extra weight. Using this method, I haven't had any unwanted cracking after the bowl is finished.

Since cedar is a long desired wood for hope chests and anything containing woolens, I'm sure the women really appreciate the timber selection. As David said, I've got to get a couple of these off my to-do list for the LOML.

Very nice bowls. What method do you use to cut the wool slot?

I use a power carving tool with a shaft, and a 3/16 dia cutter. I clean the slot up with a air file set from HF.

Nice looking bowls! The flared rim works nicely with them here.

Good call on making them a bit heavy - that was my first mistake on the first batch :D
The only other thing I'd add is make sure the slot is smooth smooth smooth or you'll definitely hear about it from the complaints department.

Very nice bowls Russell I have been thinking of making some with segmented bowls. What size did you select? I am going to submit some turned yarn holders a soon as my knee starts to feel better after total replacement last Tuesday.

The bowls are 7-8"dia by 5" h, turned side grain (not end grain).
