If a lot of boards are jointed on edge, moving the fence to even the wear on the blades is a good idea (for a jointer) For a benchtop 13" planer is varying the position of boards side to side just as good an idea for planer blades?

Also canting the boards a bit will reduce tear out

Good point, but for shorter boards be sure to maintain the minimum "plane length" (usually 12") to allow the feed rollers to feed the board through the cutter head.

Definitely. My Dad purchased a 12" planer from a high school where it had been used for many years. During the refurbishment, we noted that the center of the table was nearly .015 lower than the outer edges when setting the bottom table rollers. Apparently everyone that used it ran their boards right down the middle.

Yes - I always try to move my passes around to help ensure the best use of the entire blade.

Like everyone else has said. I feed them in different spots.

I use the right side as the finish side and the left side as the rough side.
