I was asked to make some mushrooms for a mushroom collector.

I decided to test my turning skills with the project. There is no sanding on any of the parts. Everything is straight off the gouge I figured any tool marks would enhance the natural feeling.

The tops are California Oak turned to about 1/10 inch, steamed and pressed to give them an oval feel.

The stems are Maple, also steam bent.

The base is California Redwood.

The mushrooms are 3-4" diameter and 5-7" tall.

Very, very nice. Look like the real thing.
Schrooms are difficult for me, they always turn out looking like well a uh, male member:D
The bent stems really set them apart.

That's some fine work John. Very creative and realistic. A blue ribbon winner in my book.

Love the mushrooms, very realistic. Don't really care for the base. When I was doing flowers and shrooms I like to use live edge for a base. Something to consider for the next 50 sets your asked to make!

Excellent shrooms. On the few I made I used offset turning to curve the stems.

Hackler, fresh turned Redwood never looks good. The base will quickly darken and look much better.

I love making mushrooms but have never tried bending the stems. Would boiling the wood suffice. Do you clamp the hot stems to a form to get the shape you want? Love your web site. H

Just when I thought you couldn't top yourself. That's clever.

Harold, you could probably boil the wood. I steam it in a microwave. I'm sure there are instructions online, but basically wrap it in wet papertowels and go around 1:20. I then take a clamp in the ends and squeeze until the bend looks decent.
