Here is a link to the project in question.
http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=22657 This project is done but my question is for future reference.

My question is, how do you make the earlywood and late wood of Red Oak more uniform in darkness? There is so much contrast in the darkness in the wood on the drawer fronts, tops etc. We own some commerial built Oak Dressers that have more even color even using dark stain.

Thanks in advance for the comments

John

John. I've used Bartley's Gel stains in the past on Red Oak to even everything out. Red Oak takes stain and color differently than White oak due to the grain structure and tannin content.
Might be worthwhile to check out Jeff Jewitt's(sp.)website to see what he recomends with his line of finishes.
