For some of my non-woodworking hobbies I use a product called:

<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Plano STOPS RUST Premium VCI Technology INHIBITOR.

Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor. It comes both in an oil cloth, and a small plug which you can hang in an enclosed area.

I have used these products for non-woodworking metal (ferrous and non-ferrous) collectables, and have had great luck.

My question is, if used on woodworking tools, could these products cause

finishing problems?

Thanks,

Phil

My understanding of VCI's is that they work in tightly closed spaces. How would you close up a shop tight enough and/or purchase a large enough supply to treat an entire wood shop?

I just spray my machines with Boeshield T-9, let it dry, them top it off with Top Coat so the surface is slick, and be done with it. Not the cheapest way to prevent rust, but seems to have worked for me :D
