In a previous post with the infill I found at a garage sale, I picked up this tool, like a small pickaroon.
The clearly stamped character was translated by our Japanese daughter in law as meaning ' pressure ', and she has seen this tool back in Japan, but could not ID the use.
Any ideas? I know it looks like some sort of weeding tool, but she said she didn't think so.
Any insight would be appreciated.

The broad handle makes it a carrying tool,
it can't slip out of your hand.

I'm with you, it's a pickaroon.

From reading Toshio Odate
I would say it is one of the milder disciplinary tools in the apprentice educational system. When they are not hitting you with hammers they use this. You know "Pressuring" the student to do better.

PS: ice climbing tool for climbing water falls etc.? Log handling tool ? Small logs. Small floating logs.

You sure its not a gardening tool. Maybe a trench cutter for planting seeds?

Dave,

I think it is a gardening tool, see http://www.mehr-als-werkzeug.de/product/717909/Hakenkralle.htm?lang=en

Claus -

Looks exactly like the ' Cat's Paw Claw ' - darn, not a WW tool, but neat none the less.

Thanks;

I think what you have is a tool used for handling large fish carcasses.

Thanks for the photo David - being on the West Coast where there was once a thriving fishing industry, along with many Japanese before WW2, makes sense to me -

Some of those large tuna bring amazing prices in Japan,like $20,000.00 EACH unless I am not recalling correctly. Who can afford to eat sushi over there?
