I have an old PM 221 planer with the built in sharpener. It has the head where the knives are short, kinda like an old version of a helical head. Can anyone give me a value in today's market? It has the 5 hp motor and weighs 1300 lbs.

Gracias,

I think that head was called a " Quiet head " and not very well loved. Lots of PM out there and most buyers will want to swap the head. Might be worth more to sell the grinder separately and sell the machine to someone looking to put a Byrd on it. My guess is if condition is good you might be in the 1500-2000 range. Straight knife head and grinder might be 2500-3000. My numbers are more likely high than low as I'm not a bottom feeder and a lot of old iron guys are. Dave

Jack, I'm just saying the market for the Quiet head is limited and that impacts value. Someone will value it somewhat less than a straight knife with a grinder which I think will be in the 1500-2500 range. Quiet head without a grinder is more like 1000 and the grinder might get 500-750. Dave
