I am turning some plumb bobs and would like to try incorporating a brass tip (starting with solid round brass stock...maybe 3/8" to 1/2") along with the basic wood blank. I am not a pen turner so I lack the experience blending the two mediums somewhat seemlessly. Does anyone have any experience with this specifically in regards to the tools and technique used? My guess is that it can be done with some patience and the right technique...your thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks...Andrew

Brass (and aluminum) can be easily turned on a wood lathe using HHS tools, such as your existing scrapers and other spindle tools. Both metals are soft and don't require special tooling or cooling. Just work carefully and DO NOT use your dust collection when turning metals. Wear full face/eye protection, too.

I seem to remember someone saying they even will do it with a brass screw. Predrill for the screw, install screw so threads aren't showing and turn away.
