I made this the other day effectively christening my Nova lathe. It was a joy to turn on. I like how it turned out. I'm a rookie here, so I was pleased that I didn't destroy this pretty piece of wood. 307281307282307283

Looks nice. Is that a piece of Box Elder?

That's a good way to get started on your new lathe.

You made a beautiful turning and it stayed together and you broke in your new lathe. That's a win, win, win situation! Very nice.

Very nice first project on your new lathe Adam! It looks like Box Elder burl to me. Nice job on the finish too!

Thanks fellas, I appreciate the kind words. It is box elder, which is pretty common in South Dakota. I pulled it out of the county burn pit when I was gathering up some turning wood. They cut a lot of box elder down when doing maintenance work since it grows like a weed around here in the ditches and such. It can be pretty wood sometimes, but I am not a big fan of turning it. The few times I've tried, which was a few years ago with crappy tools and a crappier lathe, it tore out a lot and I generally had little success. I had no idea what this was until I cut it and saw the red flame. It looked like a burl or root ball when I found it but it was covered in dirt and it was hard to tell.

Beautiful piece of box elder you did Adam! Good save on that piece from becoming firewood.
