View Full Version : Dust collection with dovetail jig?

Has anyone figured out an effective dust collection set up for use with the Keller dovetail jig? I've used the 2401 model for many years, and love it, it is beautifully machined aluminum, and the set up easy and nearly fool proof. The problem is the lack of dust collection -- routers with above the base collection can't collect the chips because they are created below the jig, which blocks the air suction. Below the base dust cowls, like you can use with Festool routers, won't work because they get caught on the tines of the jig. The end result is 5 minutes for perfect through dovetails, followed by 20 minutes of clean up. Thanks for any creative solutions!

Not sure how the Keller jig setup is... take a look at the VRS dust collection option on the Leigh Jig...

Maybe you can make something similar for the Keller

Gets good reviews... friend has one on his and likes it.. getting ready to make a bunch of drawers and going to buy it for mine..

Thanks Ed, that is great solution for Leigh jigs, but I don't think it will fit or attach to the Keller. I will try to make something similar.

Appreciate the info!

The Leigh rig works pretty good. For regular ones, we run them outside on the deck rail, and a helper blows the chips away with an electric leaf blower.

Rockler is advertising a attachment for their jig, check it out.

I use a Keller jig, and just resign myself to a big clean-up job.

If you have a router table with really strong dust collection, you might try the Keller on that. You run the template flat on the table, with the workpiece sticking straight up in the air. I don't thnk you'll get 100% collection with it, but it would be better than nothing. (There have been a number of jigs intended to be used like this. Here's one http://gifkins.com.au/ , and I think there was one with a name like Katie jig that doesn't seem to be around any more.)

I own one of these

If you set it properly, it can help. Also, you should be able to use your Keller jig on a router table and slide the wood manually along. Then, you can use your router table dust collection.
