Anyone tired of the winter blues? Time for it to end? Technically it's called SAD in the diagnostic manual. Today is just yucky.

For us it's not SAD, just the snow. We've had over 7 feet in the last 2 1/2 weeks. It is snowing now with a little one of only 1-2 inches and we are supposed to get another foot on Sunday. Here in NH we are used to the snow but not usually so much in such a short time.

I know what you mean, it was 75° yesterday and only got up to 55° today....

We're going through a heat wave out here - it's 90 degrees right now - in February! I wish you could send some of that precipitation to us.

I hope you lose a flip flop while walking through a prickly pear patch.
Ice dams, rookie snowplow drivers and half the cars with "all season"
tires in the ditch. I must live in the least prepared backward of New England.

It's as if everyone is surprised when Winter comes, every year.

Rich, aren't you a psychologist? Try looking at it in a different way. February 4 or 5 is the true tried and true start of spring. Using the cross quarter days to define the seasons puts the seasonal extremes where they make sense ,the middle
of the season. It's early spring and I have an Arnold "Promise" witch hazel tree which will bloom soon and sometimes starts blooming on the first day of spring. Buy some early spring plants, they won't be at the Borg . Please remit check for
60$, Sincerely , Doc Mel

Holy smokes, 7' of snow in 2.5 weeks is crazy.

Forget SAD, I'd be DISGUSTED.

SAD stands for Seasonal Affective Disorder. Long and short of it is that folks get depressed after a string of bad weather and particularly this time of year. Some call it the February dull times. March isn't much better with it warming at the end of march and getting all muddy. Yes, I am a psychologist by profession but prefer woodworker by choice. If that makes sense.

Yeah, I know, I was horsing around.

I can tell you that since I started taking vitamin D, I suffer far less from SAD.

It has been a few years now since a doctor friend explained why I should be taking vitamin D supplements.

But one thing is sort of interesting.

My "lows" in the winter are a thing of the past

But my "highs" in the summer sort of are, too. Sitting in a chair in the sun, sipping a beer, I don't get that same "this is alright" feeling I used to.

Must be a relative thing, not having had a SAD winter, I guess I don't expect my summer to compensate.

Lets talk about that in August. We will be well below zero tonight, but I will take that over 95* and 100% humidity any day.

Amen to the Vitamin D!! Makes a world of difference for me in the winter. That, and I drive a plow truck for a friend who is a landscaper. It's kind of fun, though it can be stressful at times. So I'm used to going out in the thick of it at all hours of the day or night. But I've never had to deal with more than about 15" of snow from one storm. I'm a bit curious what it would be like to get 3' of snow in one shot (the surrounding area would surely be shut down for days).

I would rather be cold than hot. You can always put on more layers to stay warm but there is only so far you can go to get cool and not get arrested.

I know a few people up here who suffer from SAD. Could have something to do with the clouds rolling in around the beginning of November and not leaving again until mid-April, getting snow almost every day or being on the receiving end of every polar vortex Canada can send this way. While sunlamps and vitamin D seem to help some, the rest of us force ourselves to get outside and enjoy the season. Some ride snowmobiles, explore ice caves (http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2014/02/18/lake-superior-ice-caves/5578095/), climb frozen waterfalls (http://www.michiganicefest.com/), snowshoe, attend the UP 200 Sled Dog Race (http://up200.org/) (which is tonight) or participate in the Trenary, MI Out House Races (http://www.trenaryouthouseclassic.com/)! You just have to make the most out of what is available!! :D

I am so thankful for woodworking. It is not SAD at all. See you guys when you dig out.;) We are dreading March here because that's usually our bad month. You guys will be able to say what ever you will say when we're snowed in. I hope each and every one comes out to the good.

I used to say the same thing. Then, after 25+ years in Michigan, moved to Atlanta. After 2 summers, I got over the "heat" thing, turned into a card-carrying sissy when it comes to cold and snow.

We got this technology called "air conditioning" that helps.

I was feeling SAD until I read this. I'm feeling better now that I don't live on the East Coast!:)

My body can't tolerate high heat combined with humidity. I got heat exhaustion twice in two weeks in 2003 and again a few years ago. I drink lots of water and Gatorade now on hot humid days when I am outside, but it doesn't always help. I have no issues with heat if there is no humidity. I was in the desert in 2013 when it was 107 degrees and I was just fine in the shade drinking water.

I have a three wheeled handcycle and try to take it out everyday to walk my dog. He'll follow me around and pester me until I take him.

Yesterday it got to a whole 14 degrees with a stiff wind. We crossed the street, went down 5 houses, crossed back over. Then he made a bee line straight back home. When I let him in the house he climbed into our bed, wriggled under a blanket leaving about two inches of tail exposed.

We call them dumb dogs but I'm not so sure.

I hate these hard winters. It only got to 74F today. Gonna be a frigid 55F tonight. Seriously- August sucks with 90/90 (degrees/humidity) but I know how lucky I am most of the year. I feel for you guys up north. My son lives in RI (Newport) and he is a good Texas boy. He keeps me informed on the horrific winter weather. Like all things- this too will pass. God bless you all.
