My wife leaves on Sunday for Cub Scout summer camp. She would like to start carving walking sticks with wood spirits on them. I am not a carver at all! What would be a nice starting knife or knives for me to get here tonight at Woodcraft so she could take them with her? Suggestions on sharpening them too would be helpful to me.

Good carving URL's are fine too.

Thank you for any quick help you could give.

A little browsing here, http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/forum/index.phpwould help. There is a guy, Rick, that runs littleshavers.com that is a master sharpener and sells a nice beginners kit.

These may halp you out,

Bob

You might want to look at the Denny knife

I just bought one from my woodcarving guild and really like it.

For sharpening I use a piece of leather on a flat wood block and a little jewelers rouge(sp) keeps it hones to a sharp edge.
