Howdy all. The wife and I will be heading to Scotland and England in a few months. It is my second trip to England and first to Scotland. As is typical, my wife has done virtually all of the trip planning (which I am more than fine with since she is great at it), but I can slip in a woodturning/woodworking-related stop or two if feasible.

We will be in Pitlochry, Stirling and Edinburgh in Scotland and then driving south to near Durham or Hexham and then on to London. We will not be making it up to the far north like Inverness, alas.

Does anyone have any recommendations on our near this route?

Thanks!

When we went (almost 10 years ago) I had found a claim on a woodworking forum that you could arrange to see the stored Ornamental Lathes that the London Industrial Museum hold. Well, while there I contacted them and it wasn't true.
I did see the machines they did have on display (not much on woodturning) but impressive.

There is a treadle (or spring pole I forget) lathe inside the HMS Victory.

We were "up north", about 2hrs from CS-UK, so we made the side trip. Hardly worth the effort and the staff made no effort to welcome us.

I tired to make a couple local club meetings, but nothing worked out. You can check for clubs near your trip at the AWGB and British WoodTurners web-sites.

I can recommend The Toolpost, near Oxford probably the best wood turning tool supplier in Europe

About 40 minutes from London.

You might want to register here: http://www.woodworkersinstitute.com/forum/default.asp

They seem like a friendly group and could help you set up a tour.

I've known of Robin for years, but hadn't bothered to learn where he lived, turns out we were within about 5 miles of his place at one point.... not that we would have just dropped in.
