Can anyone tell me the angle I should use on the variety grind jig to get the Irish grind for bowl gouges and the distance from the back of the sliding jig to the Center of the spindle;;;and should I or would it be easier to use a raptor tool guide to set the degree I need;;;thank you

Jeff, the problem is that there is not just ONE Irish grind. The nose angle can be anywhere from say 40 degrees to 75 degrees. Thats the 'included angle measured from the bottom of the flute back and down to the bottom of the gouge. The top angle can be variable also depending on the desired length of the wing. Stuart Batty and others specify 40* for both angles.

As to the Raptor, they also give a specific setting for the vari-grind in order to produce the correct angle. They do produce repeatable results when using matrix wheels that change size every time you use them.

In general, the way I learned was to grind the top to nose to give the desired wing length. Set the vari-grind and arm position (I used a sample to start and adjusted until it would reproduce the right angles. Later I bought the Raptor set.) Grind the sides until no glint of light shows and the sparks just cross the edge. Blend the nose.
