Charles Hard Townes, a professor emeritus of physics at the University of California, Berkeley, who shared the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics for invention of the laser and subsequently pioneered the use of lasers in astronomy, died early Tuesday, Jan. 27, in Oakland.

Yep, Professor Townes laid a lot of the theoretical groundwork for the laser...but Theodore Maiman physically invented it, based on (and expanding on) Townes' work, which proposed a gas laser. Maiman demonstrated the solid state ruby laser. So they were both firsts...but Prof. Townes outlasted the lot I think. Ted Maiman died in 2007.
