What would you use for this project???

I've had some call for trivet's, coasters, etc. I'm wondering what wood you would use for this type of project? Also, what sealers are the best, for instance, the trivets that might have hot items laid on the, to use? I think these would sell well, I just want to make sure I'm using the right raw materials to start off with.

Trivets I've used ceramic tiles 4x4", Bamboo works well and engrave nice. Coasters I use leather a lot, bamboo will work for coasters also.

1/4" Bamboo will be grand. You could pre-finish the material.

Why not try some thin wood from one of the Friends of The Creek? Cherry, maple, and walnut available 5/32" thick and 5.5 " wide- 12 0r 24".
Leave unfinished or finish with mineral oil. PM me for more details.

Quarter inch thick Corian would be my first choice as it will last almost forever. It engraves incredibly well and you can paint fill of use a colored epoxy.

I use George Perzel's thin woods (cherry mainly) to cut and engrave coasters, and am very happy with it. At 5/32", it is a nice thickness for that use.

I'd go with Keith, Corian all the way. Safe, impermeable, easy to clean and cuts very nicely.

I agree that corian is great stuff for this , but its kinda expensive. The price of a coaster set would not be consumer friendly for most.

Not to contradict the master but to clarify, cuts very nicely on saws and CNC machines, does not leave a clean cut with a laser but does engrave very nicely with a laser! ;)
