Does anyone know of a good, reasonably priced, hand-held can opener? I am SO tired of the junk that only lasts a few months...at best.

We've been using this OXO for several years and have been reasonably pleased with it. (Hope I'm not violating any policies with this link).

OXO makes good-quality, solid stuff. Plus - their handles, cranks, etc are designed for use by people of a certain age, who may have tinges of arthritis, etc. Not me, of course, but people very close to me. I am bulletproof. :p

We have a side-cut can opener that I really like. Instead of cutting inside the rim of the can, it cuts just below or into it on the outside, making it easy to just lift the lid off (which won't fall into the food--think more sanitary), and there are no sharp edges on the lid.

It's similar to this, but has more of a "standard" look to it:

Excellent question Harold! Thank you!

Mines a Michael Graves and it s*cks.

Why do we still need this device? Seems every can of soup now has a pull tab (even the cheep soup from Aldi's) why can't all cans have em? We need a movement!

We have had an Oxo for years, and it is a good one. We had a Zyliss before that -- very "ergo" for the times, and we had it for quite awhile. I honestly do not recall why we got rid of it.

You really can't beat a P-51 issued by Uncle Sam.

They are cheap reliable and I don't know anyone who ever wore one out.

Seriously though, I bought an OXO for my wife and she likes it. Electric ones are noisey and most don't work well very long.

We have one similar to the one Jason talks about except it is from Pampered Chef. I like because no sharp edges and is more sanitary. It cuts through the seal between the lid and the can body. I even use to open the cans with the pull tabs / easy open cans, it makes getting the entire contents out because there is no lip.

Swing Away was bought and the new owner has them made in China now. Probably better if you can find a USA made one.

I just happened to look at ours, and it, too, is from Pampered Chef. They're the bee's knees. I get kitchen gadgets for my wife, and she keeps me well-fed.

I have P51s everywhere lol 2 on a magnet on my range hood, couple in the truck and to on the MC , you never know when your gonna need to open a can. I had a wrist operation 8 years ago and my wrist is held together with a bunch of stainless screws and the arthritis is pretty bad and I have no trouble opening cans with it.Its probably good therapy for my wrist:D

The small can opener is referred to a P38, P39 or a P51. There are likely other names for them. The P51 is larger than the P38/39.

There has been one on my key ring for at least the last 45 years.

Comes in handy when the refried beans won't come out of the can, just poke a couple of air holes in the other end of the can and it drops right out.

It is kept between keys. The keys are used to add a bit of leverage. I have been able to open a can faster with one of these in the past than others have been able to open a can with the small twist key openers.

I'm sorry I can't help. I have my mother's electric can opener which was a wedding present, making it about 45 years old.

We have a Kitchenaid that we like real well. It has a big wing nut to turn which gives good leverage. I think it came from Bed, Bath and Beyond.

We also have the kind that separates the lid. Works well on some lids, no too well on others. We went back to the above.

That's the same cutting approach the Pampered Chef model George and I referenced uses, except the one you show has a ratcheting mechanism instead of a simple handle to turn. As Rick said, there is a rare lid that it doesn't open well (I think I've always managed to make it work, though).

The one on my Swiss Army knife has performed well for the last 40 years. But, that said, haven't had much call to use it in recent decades. All pull-tabs now.
