Any thoughts on what this species may be? I got this and a bunch of other nice looking pieces from a bargain bin at Woodcraft. Something rediculous like .50/lb on black friday. Nothing in the bin had a label on it. To me it looks like Marblewood....any thoughts?? Shown with 1 coat of a tung oil finish which of course darkened it a little. Thanks

My first guess would be Bocote

I am thinking the same,

I am thinking the same, Bocote. It is hard and heavy.

My first thought was Bocote, but the patterning doesn't seem quite right. I would be more inclined toward Zebrano (zebra wood). Medium hard to hard, open grained, kind of chippy (fine chips) when turning, and the most telling feature... it smells like horse manure (or zebra manure) when turned. Check these two links. The pictures may help where you have the actual piece in hand to compare.

I agree with you Brian on the patterning. It's not super hard and not that heavy of a wood. It does have some open grain, although there was not a very noticeable aroma when being worked.

It's not really black enough for bocote to me. Marblewood gets my vote.
