I found this in and old toolbox of tools. It looks like a chisel, but the bottom is indented on both sides. It looks factory, but I've never seen one before. Any ideas?

Austrian tools such as Stubai brand are painted blue. Beyond that, I don't recognize the tool.

Are the sides straight or do they flare out at the tip as it appears in the first photo? It looks like a mortise chisel but not with that apparent flare, and the side divots would be problematic after several sharpenings.

I believe it flares a little bit at the end, and was slightly wider than 1/4". At first I thought it was a chisel, but maybe it's some sort of pry tool.

If it is a chisel, you do not want to use it for prying.

It looks like there is a line from there being a lamination. That would be how an older chisel was made.

Might be a tipped lathe tool of some kind. Or maybe a scraper of some sort.

The thickening of the tip (it looks like part is proud and will interfere with sharpening the bevel), as is seen in the picture, will aid/reinforce if a levering force is applied to the tip.

If you operate on that assumption, then the inset @ the sides would enable the tip to fit b/t maybe two rivets or edges.....

I have no idea what it is, but it looks really cool, would like to have it:)

I have no idea but I wonder if Rob Lee has one in his collection

Hard to tell from the photo, but it appears to be a laminated chisel. Can you make out a lamination line along the sides?

Looks a lot like the Handy Andy line of tools for children.....

We have a winner, although the ones I saw didn't look like they had the odd indents.

Oh wow, I think I had one of those as a kid. I had completely forgotten about it until I saw that picture and the memories just hit me like a ton of bricks. Weird how that happens.

It's supposed to be a chisel, but I can't see how it would be good for much the way it is. I may grind it back, and try to square it off. I don't think I could even sharpen it properly the way it is.

That's Japanese blue steel, I believe (;))

Are those indentations witness marks from the chisel being used as a pry bar?
