When acoustic tile or panels are mounted on walls to deaden sound, how is this done?

On ceilings, to preserve the sound absorbing property of the tile, I think you aren't supposed to attach the tile directly to a hard surface. What is done on walls? Is the tile attached to some sort of lattice or spacers?

(I have no plan to put any acoustic tile on a wall, I'm just curious how it would be done.)

You can use the same mastic as for ceilings

I've done some reflection control with wall mounted panels.
They're effectively "traps" not directly mounted to reflective surfaces.

They convert sound energy into heat. A more rigid tile, as used in a drop ceiling
will not absorb much sound energy.

Ceiling tiles allowing some sound energy to pass through into the plenum above,
where it dissipates, and cannot return into the "conditioned" space.
