Hey guys!

I was wondering if any of you know if there is a 1/16" fiber board (something like MDF) material out there that works well for lasering?

Currently I use mostly 1/8" MDF, and I've got a heavy duty cardboard that is 1/16" but it's more expensive then the MDF, go figure. I've looked at 1/16" Acrylic but that more expensive then what I'm using now.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I would even like to know where to get 1/8" MDF! All I can find is 1/4".

You can get a good price on 14 ply Crescent Board (Posterboard) if you shop around. Blick has it for $2.93 in 22"x28" if you buy 10. It's only .048" thick, so a bit under 1/16" though.

If I need larger quantities, there are at least two plywood suppliers here that have it also.

I'm in the PA, NY, NJ area and I was just at my local HD and didn't see any. Is it in a weird section or do they call it by a different name?

Is it in a weird section or do they call it by a different name? There's a bin where they keep the small sheets of odd-ball sheet goods, usually at the end of one of the plywood aisles. It's actually 3mm, labeled 0.108"...they also have 6/12/18mm in the small sheets.
(I'd give you a SKU number, but I always peel the labels off before I cut it up to laser-size.)

I too have been looking for either 2mm mdf or something smaller then 1/8". I have had to followed this down to the mill level & buy pass both retailers & wholesalers. In short 1 or 2 mills in North America run something in the 2mm range at odd times of the year for custom orders. So if you are prepared to buy in pallet quantities you can get some... And don't mind waiting till the next run. Otherwise no dice...or worse order from the UK with the horrendous shipping tacked on.

Yeah that's pretty much what I have found as well, I was hoping some had a different answer.

Maybe this could be of use, hardboard tempered panel, very stiff.
It's a type of MDF but tempered and smoother.

Ken,

Interesting idea! Anyone out there tried lasing it to cut or engrave? I do like the stuff, though the very fine dust created when you cut it is annoying. If you saw it do wear respiratory protection. I tend to use it for my bench surfaces in my shop. It wears great, starts out very smooth, and absorbs polyurethane well to water proof it. That is also what you are using if you buy pegboard by the way.

Anyone lased it?

Dave

I think I mentioned in another thread I been using 2.7mm utility hardwood plywood from hd sku 833096 cuts really nice , I do find you have to watch the thickness as it varies quite a bit , have to refocus a lot but not a problem for what I do with it.
