I found this in a pile of logs at a local landfill (eastern VA) and I'm not sure what it is. Smells like and has the approximate density of pine.

My guess would be magnolia

I agree with Anthony, the bark looks like Magnolia to me.

if you cut it, it should have a pepper-y smell to it.

If you were in my area, I would say from the looks of the bark that it is Douglas fir. The wood looks a bit like DF, but I can't say for sure. If it smells like pine, and is soft like pine, my guess is a possibility. I don't know if DF grows in your area. If you turn this and it is really full of pine pitch, it is likely a species of fir. Were there any Leaves or needles with the wood? If it is fir, the needles would be flat, and you can't roll them between your fingers.
