Now, THIS !!! is the way to handle the old "getting a new Dog topic" with the significant other !!!:D

"why didn't you tell me we were getting another dog and why didn't you ask?" She said.

I said, "never crossed my mind, and if it had, I wouldn't have 'asked' anyway!".....

:D:D:D:D:D

Oh, yeah.

I sure hope he is a good dog for you.

Because it might just be you and him before long. ;)

Consider building the dog house big enough for two, just in case....:D

I always wonder when people talk about having to get permission to buy new shop tools, but a dog seems like it should be a joint decision. Good luck.

If it's a shop dog that you want,you don't need a permission.:)

I think you have to get to know your significant other and every person is different, has to be treated on an individual basis. My wife once bought a horse and then came home and told me. I pretended not to care. Essentially I think a dog costs about $10,000, a horse probably $20,000, so basically you just spent $10,000 without asking your significant other what they thought. I wouldn't be surprised if they came home with a new car.

Dogs cost $10,000? That SPCA place must be loaded :)

Only way I can figure that price out, is if the cost for feed and vet bills ,plus the cost of the Pup is amortized over 10 or 15 years. I still don't come up with 10 Grand.

Who could say no to a Blue Belton English Setter??:)

I think it is easy to get to $10k with a dog. Our Doberman- $65 of feed every 10 days totals ~$2,400 / year. Just over four years =$10K. Add vacinations, leashes, etc.; the money adds up. Assume a ten year life- $25k Cost of dog.

Dog in family, priceless!

I do not like it when my wife decides we are going to have a new pet without asking me. Mostly because I am the one who ends up taking care of the messes it makes.

Then there is the problem of finding someone we can trust to take care of them if we are going to go away for a few days.

I suggest that you name your new dog Scooby Do, because all I can say is "RUH ROH!"

I'm new here but will chime in:

Too funny you guys. Hubby never asked "if we could get a new dog" or my thoughts about getting a new dog ... if he wanted a new dog ... he would bring it home in a big box with a huge red ribbon tied around its neck. Try it ... he did that 3 times over the years ... nothing cuter than a black lab puppy with huge
feet, a pink tongue and a red ribbon. :)

I think $20,000 for a horse is very low. Around here, people have to find boarding space which is pretty expensive per month. Add feed, vet cost, tack, etc. you're way over $20K in no time at all. A horse is a very expensive animal to maintain. And you have to ride (exercise) the horse, wash them, groom them, etc. It takes a lot of time in addition to the money.

Maybe if you have a lot of land and can pasture them yourself it's more reasonable. Especially if you have a use for the horse, such as herding.
