Functionally no, but I'm pretty sure that codes require the neutral ("return") to be uninterrupted. You should put it in the hot leg.

OK thanks. That's what I was wondering. It's on the neutral now and will be an easy change.

I'm replacing a broken switch and this didn't seem right.
