OK lets see if I can figure this out!
I've had this old cast iron grate powder coated a rust texture with the intentions of making a table.

Then I thought, well I've never inlaid rocks~~http://www.sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=21972&stc=1

Then I thought of micarta (faux ivory) splineshttp://www.sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=21974&stc=1
Now I await some critique. Please help me out here as I haven't done this before.

Bruce;
Thats one fine looking table. The inlay gives it that special touch. What kind of wood did you use and how is it finished ?

Bruce,
That's a good looking table, well thought out use of materials.

Looks nice Bruce. The recesses for the green rocks looks like they'd be tough to cut out (especially the ends that frame the turquoise), but you did a great job. Howsabout a pic of the whole table?

Thanks guys! The wood is qs oak and walnut. Finished with a homebrew of BLO / tung oil with much rubbing followed by minwax. The stone is malachite (green) and turquoise that I smashed up before I realized you could buy different powders already smashed up! (Don't smash 'yer own.) I have a few more grates around in various sizes that I'll try other stuff with. I really want to experiment in nice joinery. Thanks for looking, I fairly new here and really love this site. Bruce

Bruce,

I've always liked the wood/metal combo. Good Job!
