Great show and tell.

Fitting handles to socket chisels is pretty much the same. Except most old socket chisels come already full of smoke.

I've used the same technique when bedding a plane iron in an old wooden plane. I got the idea from the logan cabinet workshop blog. It is indeed a very usefull technique. The soothing goes quick and leaves clear marks.

Adjusting the gears in the wheeldrive unit from an antique BMW motorcycle is a similar process. You paint a couple of teeth on one of the gears, then rotate them together and watch where the imprint occurs on the flanks of the teeth on the second gearwheel. Then adjust the shims to move it further up or down, in or out.
