View Full Version : "Regular" machine grease?

A pretty basic question here, but what would one consider 'regular machine grease?'
The application is the spindle height adjustment on the Hammer jointer-planer.
The manual actually calls for 'regular' machine grease. I have red grease, but not sure if that is best / or if it matters. The existing grease looks to be a dark color, almost black, but still translucent.

Any is better than none, but I mostly use lithium grease. Just what I use.

Don't get too hung up on the color of grease, it means nothing.
I would assume that the height adjustment is some type of screw arrangement and the type of grease isn't critical.
If you have a grease gun at home I'm sure that whatever is in it will be fine.

I try to get grease that matches the color of the machine, but I have too many machines;)
For that application I would say just about anything will do. Its not ever going to generate any heat as it has very limited use.
I did try some Mobil 1 on my shaper which has greaseable bearings and will not use it again. When I hung the grease gun on the wall it would drip red junk, liquid, not good. I used it up in my tractor bucket and on advise from David Kumm got some aero grease.

Blue grease, axle grease, lithium, aircraft carrier launcher. Doesn't matter.

cool. So whatever I've got around. Works for me!
It is indeed just a screw / cog arrangement, not seeing much heat.

I agree with the guys, most anything will work, But...
I strongly recommend you do not use anything with molybdenum in roller bearings. It will dramatically shorten life.
