I just started cutting up a bunch of short log pieces that were given to me. I'm having a hard time cutting because they're moving around too much and I don't feel comfortable holding them down with my foot. Any good ideas how to secure them to make the cutting safer and easier? Out back of my shop is ashfalt.
thanks,
Trevor

You should build a log cradle out of 2x4s. Basically, you make a square frame for support and a "V" shaped support in the top to cradle the log while cutting. There are several pictures and plans available online.

Build a "Sawbuck", the "X" frame previously mentioned, or buy a good Timberjack.
If you're going to keep cutting above an asphalt surface, build the Sawbuck.

if you don't want to build - get one of these:

http://www.sears.com/rockwell-chain-saw-jaw-jawhorse-not-included/p-00990223000P?sid=IDx01192011x000001&kpid=00990223000&kispla=00990223000P&kpid=00990223000&mktRedirect=y

you'll need the "jawhorse" ($100) and the log jaws ($40) - both shown in that photo.

Whatever you do, DO NOT use your feet to hold a log in place. there are lots of tools (see Bailey's) for holding logs, and lots of jigs for making a cradle. Also make sure to have steel toed boots, and, if you will be using a chainsaw on a regular basis, use chaps and possibly special boots.

Its important for safety to raise the work to a comfortable height rather than bending over. You do NOT want to get that chain into the asphalt. According to Lyle Jameison, the Workmate style portable work benches work very well. Check out his YouTube chainsaw video, and Robo's while you are at it.
