Anyone have a japanning formula they are willing to share? I have a few planes the are in need of restoring, and would appreciate any suggestions.

cheers, Paul

Paul,
Below is a link to one recipe. There are a number of different recipes and application methods that have been redeveloped over the years. I have read that this one seems to have been accepted as one of the better approaches though I have not tried it myself.

Unless the planes are of real value, many have found paints or powder coating finishes that look appropriate and are much easier to apply - though not authentic.

Good luck,

Hi Wes,

Thanks very much. I have seen references to others japanning efforts, but for some reason am unable to find the materials they use.

Thanks again for your time and attention.

cheers, Paul

Try paging through this book: http://books.jibble.org/1/5/6/2/15622/15622-8/HandbookonJapanning2ndEditionb-0.html .
It has a whole lot of information in it. As there, many of the other recipies I've seen call for shellac, and still others talk about an unspecified "varnish". Do a Google on "Japanning" and you will find lots of links.

If you are looking for an easy pre-made solution, you might try
Liberty on the Hudson, they have a japanning product called
Pontypool. Although I have not used their product, there is an
article in Badger Pond archives that outlines how to apply.
