American Elm bowl AKA White Elm

Returned and finished this bowl just a few days ago, it is a bit more than 13” wide and 3 https://forum.canadianwoodworking.com/images/smilies/quarterfraction.jpg “ high.

It has a bit of spalting and a large flame swirl of stain going through it, large pieces of Elm other than Siberian Elm are getting scarce,, this came from a rather large and long 3 feet thick log that was cut down in a park in London.

Had a bit of a battle with some firewood cutters that also wanted a share of the log, as there were lots of other logs to cut up I wasn’t too happy, and I was sneakily glad when one ran his saw into a chunk of cement that had been put into a crotch to repair an bad spot there https://forum.canadianwoodworking.com/images/smilies/1tongue.gif

Anyway it is quite nice wood, though not a very hard wood it cuts and sands and finishes well :D

Thanks Steve :), Ha yes I did, not as much as I wanted, the biggest problem was that I had only my short bar on my Chainsaw, and I didn’t dare to go home and fetch my long bar, there wouldn’t have been anything left for sure.

So I had to butcher it a bit, going in from the side as far away from the end as my bar would reach, and then cut in from the end to free the chunks up, see picture, the blocks are from the center and the half moons are the sides, anyway I did get some and not everything got made into firewood.

You know at that log dump, I have seen a Silver Maple log that was more than 3 feet across, probably close to 4, something like 15 feet long. and it was totally fine curly grain wood,...... it got all cut up into firewood :eek:

You know at that log dump, I have seen a Silver Maple log that was more than 3 feet across, probably close to 4, something like 15 feet long. and it was totally fine curly grain wood,...... it got all cut up into firewood :eek:

Now THAT makes me sick! Hope you start taking your long bar with you when visiting the dump from now on!!

Steve I’ve moved to Atikokan, a bit better than a thousand miles north west of London where I used to live, still in Ontario though, but a bit far to visit the wood dump if it was still there.

As the wise men of the city thought all this wood cutting could become hazardous to the city insurance, they decided to close the dump and have all trees go to a place to be chipped up and composted, now that’s a waste, costly in actual $$ and in a lost resource material, I got quite upset about that, but to no avail and I’m no Don Quixote ;)

Well those US defenders at the border have been absolutely ignorant and downright nasty to me several times, the last time I had a run-in at the Buffalo crossing (a couple of weeks after the 9-11 happening) I have made the decision that the USA is an unlikely destination for me ever again :mad:, so if you like you can visit here, Canada is a friendly place ;), and yes Fort Francis is my destination a couple of times every year 301964
