I'll be adding some 3/4" bench dog holes to the workbench I'm building, looking for recommendations as to good round bench dogs?

Kreg makes some plastic ones that are pretty cheap -- are they strong enough to survive much abuse?

I have a couple of brass ones that I believe came from Lee Valley. Nothing wrong with them, but I prefer ones I made from hickory dowels with a square face cut into the top. You can use a piece of wire coat hanger in a hole in the dowel to keep them from slipping when not in use. Or a button catch if you want to get fancy!

I have a set of Rocklers that came with something that have lasted years. Mostly I use my own made from 3/4" oak dowels with bullet catches installed as springs.

Veritas (Lee Valley) (http://www.leevalley.com/us/home/Search.aspx?action=n) has some very nice ones but they aren't cheap.

I have these from Big Horn. They make a longer size too. Made of aluminum and don't chip your plane blade if you hit them. DAMHIKT

Got a lathe? My bench dogs have one end turned round to fit the round holes I bored into my bench, and the other end is square, so there's lots of surface area when the dog is squeezing something. The square is the stock I turned from, so it is larger than the holes, and the dog doesn't drop into the hole.

Brass dogs?! What happens when you hit it with a cutting tool?! Wood is good -- as woodworkers should well know.

Brass is softer than your cutting tools, which is why it is used for metal bench dogs. That said, I still prefer wood.

Thanks all, I've ordered some of the Kreg dogs, I'll also turn a few on the lathe and see how both work out.

I've been using dogs like those on a "Work Mate" for many years with good success.
