This piece of spalted maple was in terrible shape. I had originally planned on a 3 legged base from walnut, but the piece of walnut had a mind of its own and had weakness in the grain structure, and would not allow me to get one of the legs made and support the vessel. I actually tried another piece for a different style base, [without gluing] but did not like the look, so I made a design on the fly change and just made a curve down to a narrow base. I wanted an inset lid, and the spalt lines on the opposite sides are really nice as well, and there is curl and other figure in the grain at different places.
The wood was given to me recently by Don Voas.
It was a bit of a salvage job, but I am glad I persisted. This is the first project I have done in a few months other than filling an order for a couple of pens and birdhouse ornaments for a lady.
Height is 14" to the tip of the finial and 7" wide at the rim of the form itself.
