Hello I am asking this for another, he found a used bandsaw, probably finnish made sometime after WW2. He would like to buy and restore it and use it professionally in his small shop, but is unsure if it will really work. The upper and lower wheels have got flanges on them, and the upper wheel cannot be adjusted like a normal bandsaw, but everything is pre-set so that the back of the bandsaw blade will creep up against the flanges. Have you ever heard of such a system, does it sound like it could work?

Sounds like the system for a metal-cutting bandsaw-- with only one blade width. Any pics?

FWIW Wood Miser band sawmills have flanged wheels.
